Crop selection is a very important part of the process,as well. It is always important to research the success rate of plants in your climate and be current on issues facing the crops in your surrounding area. Check with the Cooperative Extension Service for information on types of plants that can grow in your area.
Traditionally, herbs are one of the most forgiving classes of plants to grow. Except for excessively moist soil and total shade, almost any conditions will support herbs. Herbs thrive in sunny, dry areas. They are also some of the most frugal crops you can grow because they are outrageously priced at the grocery store and can be used to make even basic ingredients into a stand-out meal.
Perennial herbs like sage, rosemary, parsley, mints, chives and basil require very little work, but some herbs are invasive. Mints have spreading roots that will take over a large area. They are best in a container with a solid bottom rather than planted directly in the ground. Other herbs, like dill, anise, and fennel, spread easily by dropping their seeds.
