WTJX-TV will re-broadcast the funeral services of Governor Roy L. Schneider at 11:30 am on Sunday, January 15, 2023, on Channel 12.

Governor Roy L. Schneider, the fifth elected Governor of the Virgin Islands, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2022, at the age of 83. He was laid to rest following a military funeral on Thursday, January 12, 2023. Funeral services were held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral on St. Thomas.

From his humble beginnings in Savan to an exemplary military, medical, and political career, he is an exceptional son of the soil.

In 2003, Flair Magazine asked Governor Schneider how he would want to be remembered by the people of the Virgin Islands. Governor Schneider replied, “As a physician who truly cares for his people. As a guy who would go the extra mile to do whatever is necessary. God has been good to me, and I care and share my fortune. That’s how I want to be remembered.” That is exactly how he was remembered by attendees at his funeral and those who he touched throughout his lifetime.

The funeral service was hosted by Amos Carty, Governor Schneider’s Attorney at 31 years of age and Leslie Highfield Carter, Governor Schneider’s Christiansted Administrator at age 25. Together, they reminisced about Governor Schneider with several prominent leaders whose careers were impacted by the former Governor, to include: Senator Marise James, Governor Schneider’s Attorney on St. Croix, Senate President Novelle Francis, Jr., Deputy Chief of Police under the Schneider Administration, Senator Donna Frett-Gregory, who was appointed to the position of Director of Operations for the Virgin Islands Department of Justice during Schneider’s Administration, and former Senator Janette Millin Young, who served as the Governor’s Director of Communications.
