Senator Steven Payne Chair of the Homeland Security, Justice Public Safety and Veterans Affairs has called an emergency hearing with members of the VI PD and administration for September 3, to address what’s being done to curb the rampant gun violence in the territory. There have been 35 homicides so far this year.
The Department of Human Services last evening confirmed the passing of a 101-year-old woman who died of Covid-19 at the Schneider Regional Medical Center. The woman was a resident of the Queen Louise Home for the Aged who was receiving medical care at the hospital. Neither D.H.S. nor D.O.H. revealed the identity of the victim.
The eleven residents who tested positive for COVID-19 remain in "relatively good health," D.H.S. said. "There are currently 11 residents at the hospital who are positive, ten in good health and one who is being closely watched," D.H.S. added. Five of the 16 Covid-19 cases on St. Croix reported yesterday were transmitted through close contact, 1 through travel, and 10 were under investigation as of last night. On St. Thomas, 14 of the 23 cases were transmitted through community spread, 7 through close contact, and two were under investigation. The two St. John cases were transmitted through close contact, according to D.O.H.
The Virgin Islands Police Department identified the victim of a fatal accident Tuesday, August 18, on the East End Road. According to a preliminary investigation, the ATV was traveling east while the motorcycle was headed west. "Based on the investigation, the collision occurred in the westbound lane," Mr. Derima said. Emergency technicians concluded that the rider of the motorcycle had no signs. The rider of the motorcycle was identified as 55-year-old Richard M. Boehm of Cane Bay. Traffic Investigation Bureau officers arrested Azalea Fierros, age 23 of Arleta, California, and charged her with negligent homicide by vehicle. Fierros was the driver of the off-road vehicle. Bail for Fierros was set at $25,000. She could post 10% and was released.
