Gov. Albert Bryan Jr.’s proposal to have the Legislature amend and expand the Medicinal Cannabis Patient Care Act to get funds rolling toward the Government Employees Retirement System isn’t going anywhere soon. The Legislature assigned a bill number to the proposal and sent it to the Committee of the Whole. Voting against letting the measure be considered further in the Committee of the Whole were Sens. DeGraff, Oakland Benta, Gittens, Frett-Gregory, Athneil Thomas and Kurt Vialet. Voting for placing it in the Committee of the Whole were Sens. Alicia Barnes, Marvin Blyden, Allison DeGazon, Francis, Stedmann Hodge Jr., Jackson, James, Steven Payne Sr. and Sarauw.


Astia LeBron, Public Information Officer for the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Labor Office, provides an update on the computer issue that’s been plaguing the Department since last week.


Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), awarded $285,250 to the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) for the Leander Jurgen Command Hurricane Wind Retrofit Project. The wind retrofit for the police station’s building will also include the installation of impact-resistant windows, wind-rated storm doors, hardened rooftop equipment, electrical/mechanical updates, and the fitting of other necessary materials. The newly constructed station will meet the requirements of the180 mph Design Wind Speed for the USVI and the American Society of Civil Engineers statute 7-16 for wind risks relevant to critical facilities.
