The Virgin Islands Carnival Committee(V.I.C.C) has started a case against the Government of the Virgin Islands for trademarks and other intellectual property rights for the production of carnival in Charlotte Amalie. The V.I.C.C. has hosted VI Carnival for 68 years. The V.I.C.C. is moving forward with a lawsuit in the District Court of the Virgin. The VI Carnival Committee's arguments were laid out in a letter, from law firm Belzer PC, dated February 11, Friday was the deadline for the government to respond to the letter. Gov. Bryan said, "there will only be one carnival in St. Thomas in April, and the Division of Festivals will run it. Kudos to the Department of Tourism and the Division of Festivals and Cultural Heritage for their creativity and initiative."
A federal judge sentence Scott D. McKenzie, who was once the Virgin Islands Republican Party's treasurer to 12 months and one day in prison for making false statements to the federal elections commission.
Axel J. Betancourt, age 19 of Williams Delight, was arrested and charged with Kidnapping and False Imprisonment. A 16-year-old female reported that Betancourt offered her a ride home from school. However, he drove opposite from where the victim lives. She asked why Betancourt was driving in that direction, he then held the victim at knifepoint. Betancourt took her back to the campus after she started pleading with him to take her back. When contacted by police, Betancourt admitted to being in the company of the minor and that he had a knife. Betancourt’s bail was set at $10,000. He was unable to post bail and was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his Advice of Rights hearing.
