Amid a “horrifying global surge in domestic violence,” the United Nations called for a “ceasefire” and “peace at home,” as vulnerable people sheltering in place amid the coronavirus pandemic are at the mercy of their tormentors, with everyone under enormous strain.“ United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said “Many women under lockdown for COVID-19 face violence where they should be safest: in their own homes. Today I appeal for peace in homes around the world. I urge all governments to put women’s safety first as they respond to the pandemic.” Reports from countries in every region suggest that restrictions in movement, social isolation, coupled with increased social and economic pressures are leading to an increase in violence in the home.
Senator Marvin Blyden, who asked for a moratorium on anchoring permits to stem the flow of visiting private boats, disagreed with the Bryan administration’s decision to close the territory’s beaches to residents while opening some of those same beaches to private boats from abroad. “Just last week, I met with a top official of the administration and suggested a moratorium on anchoring permits so that we could slow the flow of boats that have flooded our harbors and beaches over the last month.
