On May 18 at roughly 8:52 p.m., the 911 Emergency Call Center was notified of shots fired in the parking lot of Plaza Extra West in Estate Plessen in St. Croix. Officers responded and found a male gunshot victim. The victim was transported to the Juan Francisco Luis Hospital and Medical Center via ambulance. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, and he was listed in stable condition.


Police arrested Juan Garcia, age 59 of Tan Tan Terrace, and charged him with Carrying of Firearm Openly or Concealed and Possession of Ammunition. Detectives were conducting a traffic stop in the eastbound lane of the Melvin Evans Highway, in the vicinity of Home Depot, when a vehicle driven by Garcia collided into their unmarked police car. Garcia did not stop after the collision, and the detectives pulled him over in the vicinity of the Ricardo Richards Elementary School. The detectives observed a rifle in Garcia’s vehicle, and Garcia could not provide the detectives with a license for the firearm. He was placed under arrest as a result.


As of this morning, the USVI has test 1,409. There are 69 positive cases, 1,314 negative cases, 26 pending, 61 recovered, and 6 deaths.


Schneider Regional Medical Center (SRMC) is lifting the temporary restrictions placed on elective surgeries and outpatient procedures. As the nation is reopening and moving back to normal operations, SRMC is prepared to begin scheduling non-high risk patients for outpatient and electives procedures. "The hospital will continue to follow all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the VI Department of Health guidelines,” said Dr. Amaro.

The gravel parking lot at the Theovald E. Moorehead Dock and Terminal at Enighed Pond, St. John will reopen on July 1 as a paid parking facility. The parking rate will be $8 per day. The lot currently has 200 parking spaces available and will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. VIPA will install parking lot access control equipment within the next two months. After the parking equipment has been installed, the parking rates will be as follows:
