Senate President Novelle E. Francis, Jr.in a press release says he sent a letter to Virgin Islands Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett about the Trump Administration’s rules changes for SNAP benefits. The change, effect early next year, would restrict SNAP benefits to able-bodied individuals without dependents. Francis says the rule change would be detrimental to Virgin Islanders, particularly as the job market has not fully rebounded from the 2008 recession, HOVENSA closure, and 2017 hurricanes. In his letter, Francis expressed concern that the rule change comes at a critical time for the territory. As the territory transitions out of hurricane-related repairs and the refinery moves onto the next phase of operations, unemployment is expected to increase. This rule change would most impact the segment of our population that is affected by the shifting job market.” The rule change allows for waivers to eligible areas. Francis has asked Congresswoman Plaskett to share any steps taken by her office regarding the rule change, as well as any ways that the Legislature can support initiatives that protect local SNAP beneficiaries.

The Eurocobble© pavers along Main Street and the Post Office Square have been fully installed. The roadway is now open to traffic from Cardow, heading West towards Market Square. Drivers can also once again turn left at the Post Office Square to access Main Street. Big change is, parking will no longer be allowed along Main Street. Main Street with the larger sidewalks results in a slimmer road. Police will enforce the “No Parking” rule. Work will continue in January 2020 on the side streets, as progress on the Enhancement Project progresses. The project is estimated to be completed in August 2020.
